Focus and Scope

Polymath is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to interdisciplinarity, published biannually in an electronic format at no charge to its readers. The journal celebrates the oft-neglected connections between humanities (language, literature, philosophy, speech and communication), social sciences (history, sociology, political science, psychology, social work), physical sciences (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics), and the arts (dance, theatre, music, visual arts) where the disciplines can unite, collaborate, and engage with each other towards shared research-oriented and educational goals. Pursuant to its mission, Polymath considers papers on subjects from all academic fields, though preference is given to papers with topics of an interdisciplinary nature or focused on the integration of teaching and research.

There is no fee for authors to publish in Polymath.

Mission Statement

Polymath is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to interdisciplinarity, published biannually in an electronic format at no charge to its readers. The journal celebrates the oft-neglected connections between humanities (Language, Literature, History, Philosophy, Speech and Communication), social sciences (History, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work), physical sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics), and the arts (Dance, Theatre, Music, Visual Arts) where the disciplines can unite, collaborate, and engage with each other towards shared research-oriented and educational goals. Pursuant to its mission, Polymath considers papers on subjects from all academic fields, though preference is given to papers with topics of an interdisciplinary nature or focused on the integration of teaching and research. We encourage contributors to take advantage of the opportunity to publish their articles with visual and acoustic components (for instance, static images, video and/or animation, raw scientific data) comparatively difficult (or impossible) to reproduce in traditional print media. In addition, Polymath offers also a forum to discuss and debate the shifting medium of academic publishing, exploring and embracing the academic community’s move toward electronic journals.  Polymath also features a section for exceptional undergraduate research (such as SIUE’s Senior Project), in order to provide nascent scholars the opportunity to experience first-hand professional research practices; this work undergoes a rigorous review and selection process.

Polymath is a unique disseminator of scholarship, taking advantage of the novel publication opportunities an electronic journal offers. For those desiring a physical copy, however, Print–on–Demand is an option. As universities, scholars, and publishers experience a shift in the medium of academic scholarship, Polymath provides a format which meets the publishing needs of modern academe while strengthening communication in and across disciplines. As the nature of academic disciplines and electronic publication changes, so shall we.
