Abstract

This review provides a survey and critique for English-speaking/reading audiences of one of the most important publications on Syrian sources at this time. The work reviewed is an essential source for 19th century Syrian history because it presents in readable and well-organized form the extensive contemporary notes, reports, correspondence, etc. of the first German Consul posted to Ottoman Damascus. This Consul was fluent in Arabic, present in a critical period (1849-1861) and was himself integrated into both the urban and rural scene.
